Area Description: Halfway between Morristown & Jefferson City TN. Morristown is strategically located at the crossroads of upper east Tennessee. Halfway between Knoxville and the Tri-Cities, the 3rd and 5th largest metropolitan areas in the state, Morristown is easily accessible via I-81, I-40 and US 25-E, the East Tennessee Crossing National Scenic Byway. It is within a 10-hour drive of 76% of the United States population and 19% of the Canadian population placing our community at the “center of the nation’s marketplace”. Jefferson City: Fortune 500 company Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) will establish a manufacturing facility in Jefferson City over the Oshkosh Corporation, a leading designer and manufacturer of specialty vehicles and vehicle bodies, plans to create more than 300 jobs in Jefferson County over the next three years. Acording to reporting by www.citizentribrune.com "Direct tourism expenditures in Hamblen County totaled $93.20 million, a 2.6 percent increase over 2015. Visitors left behind $5.90 million in state sales tax revenue and $2.10 million on the local level. These figures place Hamblen County 5th in direct tourism revenue within the 16 county East Tennessee Development District which includes Knox and Sevier counties. “The $2.10 million of local sales tax revenue generated by visitors to Hamblen County is just one of the many reasons that tourism is an important economic driver for a community; these tax revenues help pave our roads, fund our schools, and provide many of the city and county services on which we depend,” stated Morristown Chamber Tourism Director, Anne Ross. “Without this tourism generated revenue, each Hamblen County household would pay in excess of $300 more in state and local taxes.” Other Lakeway Area counties saw a significant increase as well. Cocke County saw a 2 percent increase in direct tourism expenditures while Grainger and Hawkins counties each saw a 3.4 percent increase. Jefferson had a 1 percent increase while Claiborne had a 1.4 percent increase. Hancock County saw a .1 percent increase while Greene County showed a 1.5 percent increase. For the 11th consecutive year, tourism topped $1 billion in state and local sales tax revenue, reaching $1.7 billion. That marks a 6.7 percent increase over 2015, higher than the national growth of travel related state tax revenues. Tourism generated 176,500 jobs for Tennesseans, a 3.3 percent growth year over year."
